--GROOMING AND APPEARANCE
--
--Appearance:
--
--Attire shall be worn and maintained in a neat and presentable manner at all times.
--
--The following criteria shall be followed:
--
--Attire shall fit appropriately (not too tight or too loose);
--
--Brass articles shall be clean and untarnished;
--
--The shirt badge shall be clean with no visible abrasive marks;
--
--Leather items shall be clean and polished;
--
--Footwear shall be in good condition and polished or evenly colored;
--
--Uniforms shall be clean and wrinkle-free;
--
--Pockets shall not be filled so as to create an unsightly bulge;
--
--Frayed, torn, patched, faded, or mended items are not allowed.
--
--Grooming:
--
--Tattoos, body art, and/or brands:
--
--Shall not be permitted on the hands, face, neck, or scalp;
--
--That are excessive, obscene, sexually explicit, discriminatory (sex, race, religion, etc.) shall not be permitted;
--
--That advocate or symbolize gangs, drugs, or extremist groups shall not be permitted;
--
--Shall not be visible while wearing uniform attire. Tattoos on arms shall be covered by wearing a long sleeved uniform shirt (no bandage-type wraps).
--
--Cosmetics shall be subdued and blended to match the natural skin color of the individual.
--
--False eyelashes are prohibited.
--
--Fingernails shall not extend further than one fourth inch beyond the end of the fingertip.
--
--Fingernail polish, if worn, shall be a soft shade which compliments the natural skin tone of the individual.
--
--Hair:
--
--Must be clean and neat;
--
--Styles and colors that depart from the normal, conservative community standards shall not be permitted;
--
--For women: Does not extend further than the bottom of the yoke of the Class B uniform shirt while standing (clerical staff are exempt from this requirement);
--
--For men: Does not extend further than one inch below the bottom of the earlobe.
--
--Hair that is combed or styled forward shall not be lower on the forehead than the eyebrows (measured from the highest point of the eyebrows);
--
--Shall not be visible on the forehead when a hat is worn;
--
--May be combed over the ears; but, shall taper naturally into the hair not more than two inches in front of the ears;
--
--No decorations shall be worn in the hair;
--
--Hair combs, clips, or pins that match the color of the hair may be worn;
--
--Shall not extend greater than two inches from the scalp for natural-styles;
--
--Wigs and hair-pieces are permitted as long as they conform to the standards herein.

--Staff shall be clean-shaven at the beginning of their shift.

--Facial hair on the jaw below the side burns is prohibited.

--A formal uniform inspection may be conducted once a year or more for all Certified Staff. This inspection shall be conducted by a lieutenant or above-ranking WCSO official.
--
--Other inspections may be conducted by or under the direction of the Sheriff.
--
--
--
--PROHIBITIONS
--
--Uniforms shall not be worn by candidates for office or their supporters while they are engaged in campaigning activities.
--
--Uniforms shall not be worn while speaking at public or community groups without specific permission from the Sheriff, Undersheriff, or division chief deputy.
--
--Uniform items shall not be mixed (e.g., uniform shirt with blue jeans or uniform coat with non-uniform attire).
--
--
--
--EXCEPTIONS
--
--Identifying uniform items may be worn by Certified Staff when responding to an emergency while off duty.
--
--Employees may be excused by a supervisor from wearing specific items if wearing the item creates a safety hazard.
--
--Employees on special assignments may be excused from the grooming standards with specific permission from the Sheriff, Undersheriff, or division chief deputy.
--
--With approval from the division chief deputy or above-ranking WCSO official, athletic shoes may be worn with a Class-B or Class-C uniform.
